Bill Ends Term Limits For School Boards
School board members would be exempt from Idaho’s term-limits law, under legislation introduced Monday.
Former Rep. Herm Steger, speaking on behalf of the Idaho School Boards Association, said school trustees are the only non-paid elected officials covered by the law.
The law was enacted by initiative in 1994. It prevents all Idaho elected officials, from governor down to school board members, from being listed on the ballot after they reach the measure’s limits for service.
The measure also sought to limit congressional terms, but was found legal only for state offices.
Steger said, “There are quite a few (school) districts where they have to go out and persuade people to run.”
The Senate State Affairs Committee voted unanimously to introduce the bill. A hearing will be scheduled.
