CV Overtakes Mead, Clinching Tie For 2nd

Central Valley continued its second-half roll, clinching a tie for second place in the Greater Spokane League boys standings with a 50-42 victory over Mead at the Arena Tuesday night.

The Bears completed the regular season with a 10-6 league record, a half-game ahead of Mead, which finishes up against University on Thursday. If the Panthers win, Mead and CV will meet in a tiebreaker on Saturday at North Central.

The Bears (13-7 overall) earned their fifth straight win by racing to a 31-17 lead at halftime and blunting Mead’s charge by hitting 11 of 14 fourth-quarter free throws.

Carson May propelled the Bears to the big early lead with 11 of his 13 points in the first half, nine in the second quarter when Mead (11-8, 9-6) outscored the Panthers 18-8.

Mead held the Bears to six points in the third quarter to get back into the game, and the Panthers were within a basket with possession of the ball late in the fourth quarter.

Ferris 61, Lewis and Clark 38

The league-champion Saxons (18-1, 14-1), ranked second in the state, played stifling defense to defeat the Tigers (12-7, 8-7) at the Arena for their 11th straight win.

Scott Stocum and Leonard Harmon combined for 36 Ferris points.

The Tigers missed all 12 of their 3-point attempts and shot just 32 percent for the game (16 of 49).

Paul Mencke and Mike Homer, one-two in the league in scoring at more than 37 points per game, combined for just 19 LC points, five by Mencke coming in the final minute.

Gonzaga Prep 59, Shadle Park 51

The Bullpups (12-7, 8-7) assured themselves of no worse than a tie-breaker playoff game as Paul Sweeny sparked them past the visiting Highlanders (8-11, 7-8).

Sweeny’s 3-pointer in the fourth quarter tied the game 45-45, and he hit 6 of 7 foul shots down the stretch. Sweeny scored 11 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter, when the Bullpups made 11 of 13 free throws.

Shadle Park drops into a tie with University for the final playoff spot. The Highlanders finish with Ferris at Spokane Falls on Thursday, while the Titans go to Mead. If the teams remain tied, the tiebreaker game is Saturday at North Central.

The Indians (8-11, 5-10) blew an 11-point lead but recovered to hold off the Pirates (1-18, 0-15) at NC.

Chris Blotsky made two late free throws for the Indians. Jerry Holdren had 24 points and 10 rebounds for NC.

De’Andrey Mosby led Rogers with 15 points and eight rebounds.
