Five Still In Hospitals After Wreck

Three children, their school principal and an Idaho woman remained hospitalized Friday after a collision on Lookout Pass that killed another Idaho woman.

A small pickup truck carrying the two Idaho women skidded broadside into the small van that was bringing the children back from a ski outing about 5 p.m. Thursday, Montana Highway Patrol officer Roman Zylawy said.

Catherine A. Rowe, 32, of Wallace, a passenger in the pcikup, died in the collision.

The two most seriously injured children were flown to Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane. Bethany Peterson, 10, of Polson, was listed in serious condition, and Sarah Freedman, 11, of Ronan was listed in stable condition.

St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula said Lena Peterson, 8, of Polson, was in good to stable condition, and Susan Jameson, 32, of Smelterville, Idaho, was in serious but stable condition.

Leonard Quaile, 41, principal of Glacier View Christian School at Ronan, was in stable condition at Mineral Community Hospital in Superior.

Zylawy, the highway patrol officer who investigated, said Quaile was driving his personal van, bringing eight of the school’s fourth- through eighth-grade children home after a ski outing. His wife was following in a larger vehicle carrying more children.
