Georgetown did things no one had done to Connecticut since November.

The 11th-ranked Hoyas ended the third-ranked Huskies’ 23-game men’s basketball winning streak and chance at a perfect Big East season with a devastating 77-65 victory Monday night at Landover, Md.

Georgetown (22-5, 11-4 Big East), which was led by Allen Iverson’s 26 points and eight steals, did it the way it used to in the old days - with a suffocating defense so good that even Ray Allen had one of his worst games of the season.

The Huskies (24-2, 14-1) last lost to Iowa in the semifinals of the season-opening Great Alaska Shootout. Their start matched the best ever in the Big East. St. John’s went 14-0 in 1984-85, and Georgetown ended that run as well.

A 16-1 burst gave the Hoyas a 30-12 lead with 9:43 left in the first half. The Huskies had 12 turnovers at halftime and Allen, second only to Iverson in the league scoring race, was 1 for 9 from the field at halftime with two points.

Doron Sheffer led the Huskies with 23 points on 6-of-8 shooting from 3-point range. Allen finished with 13 points on 5-for-18 shooting.

The Hoyas led 43-31 at halftime.

(5) Kansas 81, Nebraska 71

At Lawrence, Kan., Raef LaFrentz powered his way inside for 17 points as the Jayhawks (22-2, 10-1 Big Eight) beat the Cornhuskers (15-11).

LaFrentz had 10 rebounds as the Jayhawks maintained a two-game lead over Iowa State for the conference title.

(6) Cincinnati 69, Saint Louis 64

At St. Louis, Art Long scored all but two of his 14 points in the second half and Danny Fortson hit six straight free throws in the last 2 minutes as the Bearcats (20-2, 9-1 Conference USA) held off the Billikens (13-10, 3-8).

Saint Louis shot only 32.7 percent (16 for 49), but made it close at the end with free-throw shooting, going 26 for 31 from the line.

(25) Wisc.-G.B. 81, Wisc.-Milw. 66

At Green Bay, Wis., Jeff Nordgaard scored 26 points as the Phoenix (22-2, 14-0 Midwest Collegiate Conference) clinched the MCC title with a win over the Panthers (8-16, 4-9).

Kevin Olm and Ben Berlowski, the team’s second-leading scorer, finished with 15 points apiece.
