Obituaries

Pia Raccaro Osburn, Idaho

Service for Pia Raccaro, 83, was held Friday. Burial followed at Nine Mile Cemetery in Wallace. Shoshone Funeral Service in Wallace was in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Raccaro, who was born in Colorado, died Wednesday.

She lived in the Silver Valley most of her life, graduating from Wallace High School in 1929. She later worked as a dental assistant in Wallace for 40 years.

Ms. Raccaro was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Pinehurst.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Edwards of Osburn; three nieces, Marie Visintainer, Joan Herbig and Bunny Patchett; and three nephews, Gary Raccaro, Matt Malutta and Bud Raccaro.

Memorials may be made to the Silver Wood Good Samaritan Center in Silverton, Idaho.

Lawrence Buchanan St. Maries

Service for Lawrence P. Buchanan, 68, will be today at 2 p.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.

Mr. Buchanan, who was born in St. Maries, died Wednesday.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He later worked as a logger and for the Idaho Department of Transportation as a heavy equipment operator for 20 years. He retired in 1976.

Mr. Buchanan enjoyed woodworking, farming and gardening and was active in 4-H.

He was a member of the St. Maries Church of the Nazarene and St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Ellen; four daughters, Tanya Pugsley of Hayden Lake, Idaho, Evelyn Vineyard of Priest River, Idaho, Phoebe Falkner of Everett and Lari Buchanan of Newport, Ore.; one brother, Darrell Hanna of California; one sister, Phoebe Dorlan of Medford, Ore.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Julianne Rowberg Greenacres

Service for Julianne Rowberg, 66, will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Burial service is planned for 11 a.m. Monday at Freeman Cemetery.

Born in Portland, Mrs. Rowberg died Wednesday.

She graduated from Central Washington State College with a degree in education. She was a homemaker.

She married Willard Rowberg in Norway in 1951.

She was a 35-year Spokane resident and was a member of Otis Orchards Community Church. Mrs. Rowberg is survived by her husband of 44 years; four daughters, Kari Kimsey of Princeton, Idaho, Rebecca Shannon of Spokane, Rachel Barnes of Ammon, Idaho, and April Anderson of Palmer, Alaska; her mother, Lutie Bailey of Welches, Ore.; three sisters, Barbara Pearson of Brookings, Ore., Jacqueline Oldenstadt of West Linn, Ore. and Fredricca Crowder of Welches, Ore.; one brother, Hallard Bailey Jr., of Chiloquen, Ore.; and 14 grandchildren.

Kenneth Gunderson Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Kenneth T. Gunderson, 85, will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. Mr. Gunderson, who was born in Plaza, N.D., died Monday in Lakeland, Fla.

He moved to North Idaho in 1938 from North Dakota, where he worked for John Deere Combine. In Coeur d’Alene he worked as a mechanical maintenance man for Luke’s Transfer and was also employed by Lillian’s Drapery for many years.

He spent the last two winters in Florida.

Mr. Gunderson was a member of the Lutheran Church and was a past member of the Coeur d’Alene Eagles Lodge and the Coeur d’Alene Gun Club.

He was preceded in death by two wives, Ruby and Lillian.

Survivors include a brother-in-law, Charles McLain of Coeur d’Alene.

Alice Carnie Coeur d’Alene

Service for Alice Mildred Carnie, 90, will be today at 11 a.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Carnie, a lifetime resident of Coeur d’Alene, died Monday.

She graduated from the University of Idaho and taught school at Cougar Gulch Grade School and Harding Elementary and was an English instructor at Coeur d’Alene High School before retiring.

After her retirement, she taught at the Epiphany School in Honolulu for three years before returning to Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Carnie was a member of the Mica Grange, Shakespeare Club, and past 4-H Leader-of-the-Year. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Coeur d’Alene and the Wesleyan Club and was a longtime member of the Happy Family Homemaker Club of Mica Flats.

She previously wrote articles on Mica Flats news for the Coeur d’Alene Press.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles.

Survivors include three sons, George of Colville, Wash., and Duncan and John, both of Coeur d’Alene; and two daughters, Marybelle Zehnder of California and Shirley Lee of Honolulu.

Eunice McEwen Fernwood, Idaho

Service for Eunice Marie McEwen, 80, will be today at 11 a.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Mrs. McEwen, who was born in Marquam, Oregon, died Sunday.

She graduated from high school in Marquam and lived in Portland before moving to Spokane in 1950. She worked as a hostess at the Davenport Hotel for over 25 years, retiring in the mid-1970s.

Mrs. McEwen moved to Fernwood in 1991. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Charles, in 1984.

Survivors include two sons, Bill of Fernwood and Ray of North Bend, Wash.; two brothers, Clifford and Howard Swartout, both of Oregon; four sisters, Thelma Freed, Elsie Wolf and Marcella McEwen, all of Oregon, and Kathleen Matovitch of California; and three grandchildren.

Cyrus ‘Earl’ Merrifield Priest River, Idaho

Service for Cyrus “Earl” Merrifield, 83, will be at 11 a.m. today at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Priest River. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Priest River.

Mr. Merrifield, who was born in Glendale, Ky., died Wednesday.

He served in the Army during World War II with the 8th Air Force.

He moved to Priest River in 1946 and was a millworker for Louisiana Pacific.

He married Dorothy Murman in Priest River in 1954.

Mr. Merrifield was a member of Priest River Community Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; two sons, Pat Merrifield of Sandpoint and David Merrifield of Whidbey Island, Wash.; three daughters, Becky Merrifield, Ruth Holbert and Elizabeth Sanderson, all of Spokane; one sister, Laura Borer of California; seven granddaughters and one grandson.

Ingar Johnson Plains, Mont.

Memorial service for Ingar Johnson, 80, will be at 1 p.m. today at United Methodist Church in Plains. Coffelt-Bunch Funeral Service in Plains is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnson, who was born in Norway, died Feb. 15.

He came to the United States with his family and they settle in Whitepine, Mont. He attended high school in Thompson Falls, Mont., and held the county pole-vaulting record from 1933 until it was broken in the 1960s.

In 1942 he married Rachel Pilgeram. She died in 1948.

Mr. Johnson was a carpenter and a logger. In 1954 he moved to Wilbur, Wash., to help on a farm, and later he became a wheat farmer.

He married Jeanne Chapman in 1961. They farmed in Wilbur until he retired in 1981 and they returned to Plains.

Mr. Johnson was a member of Almira Masonic Lodge 172, Algeria Shrine, Clark Fork Valley Shrine Club and Plains Lions Club.

His wife, Jeanne, died Jan. 29 Survivors include four daughters, Beverly McLaughlin, Bonnie Hanley and P.J. Johnson, all of Spokane, and Leslie Green of Aberdeen, Wash.; one brother, Howard Johnson of Plains; one sister, Dorothy Putz of Spokane; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.

William Pegg Spokane

Private gathering for William Pegg, 82, will be held at a later date. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pegg, who was born in Hayden Lake, Idaho, died Tuesday.

He began driving for Spokane Pacific Freightliners in the 1930s.

He had been a truck driving instructor for Spokane Community Colleges and drove for United Buckingham until he retired in 1973.

Mr. Pegg was a member of Teamsters Union Local No. 690 and was a World War II Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Leone Pegg; one son, Ken Pegg of Spokane; one sister, Ada Matney of Klamath Falls, Ore.; and four grandchildren.

Hazel Robinson Pullman, Wash.

Service for Hazel R. Robinson, 89 will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman. Burial will follow at Pullman Cemetery.

Mrs. Robinson died Monday at the Latah Care Center in Moscow, Idaho, where she had lived since 1992. She was born on a farm in Mondovi, Wash.

She graduated from high school in Davenport, Wash., and in 1927 married Everett Robinson in Reardan, Wash.

They settled in Davenport before moving to Pullman, where they operated the Pullman Grange Supply Store from 1931 until 1949. Mrs. Robinson served as bookkeeper. In 1941 she began a catering business that continued into the 1980s.

In 1949 they moved to Genesee, Idaho, and operated the Robinson Cash Hardware Store until 1961. They established the Blue Fur Chinchilla Ranch in 1952.

Her husband died in 1978, and Mrs. Robinson maintained the chinchilla ranch for several years.

She also worked for the University of Idaho from 1961 until 1972 and as a cook for the Kappa Sigma fraternity. She retired in the early 1980s.

Mrs. Robinson was a member of Whelan Grange, Genesee Community Church and Pythian Sisters.

Survivors include one son, Dwight Robinson of Anchorage, Alaska; one daughter, Glena Nelson of San Dimas, Calif.; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Christine Hodgkinson Newport, Wash.

No service will be held for Christine Hodgkinson, 85, at her request. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hodgkinson, who died Sunday at Newport Hospital, was born in Sacramento, Calif.

She and her husband, Norman Hodgkinson owned an advertising agency in California, and she had worked for the state of California.

Her husband died in 1968.

She had previously lived in Bonner County, Idaho, and had moved to Newport 11 years ago.

She is survived by one son, Norman “Sonny” Hodgkinson of Citrus Heights, Calif.; and one sister, Lillian Madson of California.
