Cigar Still Out
Cigar, recovering from a bruised foot, walked under tack at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Fla., but the 1995 horse of the year won’t get back to the track until at least next Wednesday.
The stone bruise in Cigar’s right front foot, discovered by trainer Bill Mott early last week, is much improved but still a problem.
The injury kept Cigar’s from Saturday’s $1 million Santa Anita Handicap. It’s also jeopardizing plans to have the champion run in the $4 million World Cup in Dubai March 27.
Hollywood Park in Inglewood, Calif., was selected to host the Nov. 8, 1997, Breeders’ Cup races, beating out cross-town rival Santa Anita, the other finalist for the honor.
Hollywood Park hosted the Breeders’ Cup in 1984, the first year of the $10 million, seven-race event, and again in 1987.
The 1996 Breeders’ Cup will be held Oct. 26 at Woodbine, in Toronto.
