Murder Suspect Surrenders In Cda 18-Year-Old Man Wanted For Questioning In Colorado Shooting Death In December

Police surrounded a Coeur d’Alene motel Wednesday night as a Colorado murder suspect turned himself in to Idaho State Police.

Jason Mayo, 18, is wanted for questioning in the shooting death of a 32-year-old Littleton, Colo., man.

Littleton police suspect Mayo and another teenager killed Monte Charbonneau on Dec. 27 to impress the victim’s former wife, according to accounts of the slaying in the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News.

Mayo called the ISP office in Coeur d’Alene at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“He told me that he had received information from his grandmother that the police were looking for him in Colorado and if that was the case, he wanted to turn himself in and get the matter taken care of,” said Sgt. Jay Komosinski.

Mayo and his father, Dennis Mayo, arrived in Coeur d’Alene earlier Wednesday. Dennis Mayo is considering buying property and moving to the area, Komosinski said.

Jason Mayo was on parole for prior criminal convictions when he left Colorado to come to Idaho. However, he and his father had obtained permission to travel out of state when they left, said ISP Lt. Doug Camster.

After they left, however, warrants were issued for Mayo’s arrest, authorities said.

Mayo’s father told his son running from police would only get him in more trouble. “He didn’t want his son to get hurt,” Camster said.

Officers from ISP, Coeur d’Alene Police and the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department surrounded the Motel 6 on Appleway.

Although Mayo said he would turn himself in, police became concerned when he left the motel room shortly beforehand, Komosinski said. Police surrounded the building to make sure no one would get hurt.

The Mayos, however, were cooperative and the arrest occurred without incident.

Mayo was arrested on a warrant for parole violations, Camster said. A murder warrant had not been issued as of Wednesday night, but it is expected soon, Camster said.

“We’ve been looking for this guy for several days,” said Littleton police Detective Russell Hoffman.

“This helps a lot.”

Charbonneau’s body was found Saturday in a Littleton motel room. Four people, including his ex-wife, were arrested New Year’s Eve in connection with the slaying.

Police believe Charbonneau’s ex-wife talked about wanting her husband dead in front of the teenagers, who are suspected of carrying out her wishes to impress her.

Mayo is being held at the Kootenai County Jail.

A detective from the Littleton Police Department is scheduled to fly to Coeur d’Alene today.
