Ucla Quickly Selects Toledo After Barnett Rejects Offer

Compiled From Wire Services

UCLA moved quickly after being rejected by Gary Barnett on Thursday, hiring offensive coordinator Bob Toledo as its new football coach.

Toledo succeeds Terry Donahue, who announced Dec. 11 he was retiring after 20 years on the job to become a TV football analyst.

Barnett, who guided Northwestern from obscurity to the Big Ten championship this season, decided to remain with the Wildcats despite being offered what UCLA athletic director Peter Dalis called a “wonderful compensation package for both Gary and his assistant coaches.”

Florida coach Steve Spurrier is giving NFL teams with coaching vacancies a week to talk to him, according to a report in the Nashville Banner.

The one-week period started Wednesday, hours after Florida lost to Nebraska 62-24 in the Fiesta Bowl.

Kentucky senior tailback Moe Williams, the SEC’s leader in rushing yardage (1,600), announced he will enter the NFL draft.

Jay Schaake has resigned after five seasons as quarterbacks coach at Oregon State University.

School officials announced Southern California will play Penn State in the Kickoff Classic on Aug. 25 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
