Washington Wins Easily Over Usc
Pac-10
Washington’s Mark Sanford couldn’t understand why anyone was surprised.
“The last nine to 10 games of last year I averaged 22 points, all against Pac-10 opponents,” Sanford said. “I’m capable of it every night.”
The 6-foot-8 sophomore forward was at his slam-dunking best Thursday night, tying his career high of 35 points in 30 minutes in the Huskies’ 94-72 win over Southern California.
The high-jumping Sanford had four dunks, made 13 of 19 shots, was 3 for 3 from 3-point range and had 11 rebounds as the Huskies won their league opener in their most impressive game of the season.
“That was by far our best performance,” coach Bob Bender said.
And how about Sanford’s performance?
“He just took over,” USC coach Charlie Parker said.
Sanford had 20 points in the first half as Washington built a 15-point lead. By the time he fouled out with 5:53 left, Washington led 77-50.
“I don’t think this should be a surprise to anybody,” Sanford said. “I hope it gets our team some recognition and helps us get ranked in the polls.”
Jason Hamilton, the Huskies’ point guard, scored 10 points and Jason Hartman came off the bench and got 10.
