Kafelnikov Wins Down Under

Top-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia defeated No. 8 Byron Black of Zimbabwe 7-6, (7-0), 3-6, 6-1 in the final of the $328,000 Australian Hardcourt tennis championships at Adelaide, Australia.

It was the second time in three years Kafelnikov won the title.

The top-seeded Australian pair of Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge won the doubles final, beating Sweden’s Jonas Bjorkman and Tommy Ho of the United States 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).

At Doha, Qatar, Petr Korda of the Czech Republic beat Younes el-Aynaoui of Morocco 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 7-6 (7-5) to win the Qatar Open.

Pete Sampras has a fever and flu and will miss the Colonial Classic exhibition in Melbourne, Australia - the only event he was scheduled to play before the Australian Open, according to Colin Stubs, tournament director of the Colonial Classic.
