Newport Makes Log-Jam For First

Laurie Vallieres had five assists and contributed important free throws and a 3-pointer Saturday as Newport (4-2, 9-3) created a three-way tie for first place in the Northeast A with a 54-45 upset over third-ranked Colfax (5-1, 11-1).

Vallieres had two free throws to tie the game at 40 to end the third quarter. Her 3-pointer early in the fourth gave the Grizzlies a 45-41 lead and charged a 10-2 run. Newport’s Michele Carrara had 12 points and nine rebounds.
