Salvage Logging Sales To Be Offered

From Staff Reports

Two small salvage logging sales will be offered this winter on the Fernan Ranger District of the Idaho Panhandle National Forests.

The sales will deal with trees blown down by winter winds or killed by mountain pine beetles on Long Mountain and near English Point. Between 100 and 200 trees will be taken from each of the areas.

The logs will be removed from English Point with horses, minimizing the affects of logging. Conventional yarding systems will be used at Long Mountain.

The Forest Service wants to salvage the trees as soon as possible, ground conditions permitting, to minimize tree deterioration and reduce the risk of insect populations building up in the wind-blown trees, a Forest Service press release said.
