Berg Named To City Council

Gov. Phil Batt on Thursday appointed businesswoman Diane Berg to fill a vacant seat on the Spirit Lake City Council.

“I’m glad people have that much faith in me,” Berg said.

She said she wants to help heal political divisions that have split the town in the wake of Police Chief Jeff Alexander’s firing.

Last year, Berg helped fight off the annexation of a 358-acre industrial and residential development.

Townspeople recommended her to the governor with letters and calls.

Berg, 49, moved to Spirit Lake six years ago from Duluth, Minn. She and her husband, Gary, own Spirit Lake Taxidermy. She also works at Oxarc Welding and Industrial Supply in Spokane.

In addition, she serves as a volunteer emergency medical technician with the Spirit Lake ambulance crew.

“Diane will serve the people of Spirit Lake with fairness and integrity,” Batt said. “She understands how important it is for Idaho’s rural areas to manage growth, and to promote it in a way that benefits the entire community.”
