Rodney Newsom made 7 of 12 3-point shots and scored 23 points Thursday night as No. 9 Memphis beat Arkansas 94-72 for its 28th straight home victory.
Newsom also had eight rebounds, helping the Tigers’ extend the nation’s second-longest home winning streak. The victory ended Arkansas’ four-game winning string in the series.
Reserve Chad Allen had 20 points and nine rebounds, including eight on the offensive end, for Memphis (12-2). Lorenzen Wright added 20 points for the Tigers.
Memphis broke the game open midway through the second half with a 19-1 run over a 4:44 stretch, led by the 3-point shooting of Newsom.
Arkansas (9-6) never got closer than 16 the rest of the way.

At Blacksburg, Va., Ace Custis had 17 points and the Hokies survived a late miss by the Flyers.
Dayton (9-6, 1-3 Atlantic 10) had a final chance to win, but Coby Turner’s double-pumping, driving jump shot just inside the foul line bounced off the rim with 4 seconds left and Virginia Tech (11-1, 4-0) rebounded.
Damon Watlington went over the 1,000-point career mark and finished with 13 points for Virginia Tech.

At Salt Lake City, Ben Melmeth had a three-point play with 16 seconds left in the second overtime and the Utes scored nine of the game’s last 11 points to beat the Rams.
Colorado State (9-6, 3-3 Western Athletic Conference) led 80-77 before Keith Van Horn made two free throws, hit a turnaround jumper and passed to Melmeth for the dunk that gave Utah (13-3, 5-1) an 83-80 edge.
Melmeth made a free throw to complete the three-point play. After Bryan Christiansen hit a jump shot for the Rams with 4 seconds to go, Andre Miller made two foul shots for Utah with 3 seconds remaining.

At Iowa City, Iowa, Chris Kingsbury, one of three players pulled from the starting lineup, scored 18 points, including a key 3-pointer and two free throws down the stretch, to lead the Hawkeyes over the Fighting Illini (11-6, 0-5 Big Ten).
Kingsbury made two shots from beyond the arc during a 17-4 second-half run for Iowa (14-3, 3-2), which overcame a 47-40 halftime deficit.
