Morris Keys Mead Rally That Fells Lc

GSL boys

A year after being swept by Lewis and Clark during the regular season, the Mead boys basketball team returned the favor.

Adam Morris scored seven points in the fourth quarter to rally the Panthers past the Tigers 63-50 Friday night at LC. Mead won the first-round game against LC 51-48.

The Tigers led 44-39 with 5 minutes remaining, but the Panthers (8-1 Greater Spokane League, 9-3 overall) held LC (5-4, 9-4) to just six points the rest of the way.

Morris, who finished with 13 points, made five free throws in the final minute to help extinguish Lewis and Clark’s upset bid.

“When we were down, we didn’t give up,” Mead coach Jim Preston said. “We maintained composure and defense. That’s been one of the keys for us all year.”

Another key for the Panthers was getting LC scoring leader Paul Mencke into foul trouble. In the first half, Mencke scored 16 points and helped hold Mead’s Ralph Castaneda scoreless. Mencke picked up his fourth foul early in the third period, however, and the 6-foot-5 forward sat most of the second half before fouling out with 3:32 left.

“We really had a great deal of difficulty stopping Paul Mencke, and when he got in foul trouble that took away a great deal of their offense,” Preston said. “He’s a tremendous player and very difficult to stop, and I don’t think we did as good a job as I would have liked to on him, but most of that’s probably because of Paul and what he did.”

LC coach Glenn Williams said another big factor was the discrepancy in the number of fouls. The Tigers were charged with 22, the Panthers only eight.

“I don’t know if we were fouling that much more than the other team, but we sure had a lot more fouls called on us, and I think that really frustrated us mentally.”

In the first half, Mead was paced by Damian Long’s 22 points. Long finished with four 3s and 25 points.

With the victory, the Panthers moved a half-game ahead of Ferris in the GSL standings. The fourth-ranked Saxons (7-1, 11-1) were idle.
