She’s Made A Career Of Shopping

Ward Sanderson Staff Writer

When Joan Lewis says she has always loved shopping, she isn’t kidding.

She just couldn’t stay out of the stores. Finally, Lewis came to an inevitable conclusion.

“I decided that’s what I wanted to do with the rest of my life,” she says.

So Lewis bought into one of her favorite fashion haunts this month, and is now part-owner of Sherri’s Consignments at 11622 E. Sprague, two doors west of the Opportunity Post Office.

Lewis had been a regular at the store ever since Sherri Wheeler opened it about a year ago. It had been quite a year, though - things got so busy Wheeler decided she needed a hand.

That one familiar face seemed the perfect candidate. First, Lewis worked at the store for a couple of months to get a feel for it. Then she decided the fashion trade was definitely for her.

The best part, she says, is the consignment concept.

“I thought, ‘What an interesting idea,”’ Lewis remembers. “And we don’t have to pay for our inventory until it sells.”

Sherri’s Consignments no longer deals just in women’s clothing, but in men’s and children’s wear as well. The business doesn’t accept any clothing more than three years old - the merchandise definitely isn’t vintage.

“We’re pretty upscale,” Lewis says.

Evergreen moves to Valley

Evergreen Lawn & Tree Care is planning to move into a new Valley location at 9923 E. Trent by mid-March.

Evergreen was based on the North Side at 3729 E. Nebraska for eight years. In October, it temporarily relocated to the Spokane Industrial Park after its North Side property sold faster than anticipated. Kathy Kemink, the business’s office manager, said the original location was just too small for Evergreen’s 15 trucks.

The business provides general grounds maintenance - such as pest control, pruning, fertilizing and even snow plowing - for commercial and residential properties.

Work on Evergreen’s new 6,000-square-foot office and warehouse building started in late November.
