Umass Wins; Camby Still Out

With star center Marcus Camby out for the fourth straight game, top-ranked Massachusetts needed overtime before beating Pittsburgh 79-71 Tuesday night behind 27 points from Carmelo Travieso.

UMass (17-0) remained the only unbeaten team in major college basketball and set a school record with its 17th consecutive victory.

Pitt (8-6) lost for just the 11th time in the last six years at Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh.

(4) UConn 116, Central Conn. St. 46

At Hartford, Conn., Rudy Johnson scored a career-high 24 points and the Huskies (17-1) beat the Blue Devils (7-8).

The margin of victory was the biggest in UConn’s history, surpassing the 115-47 win over Central in 1990-91.

Indiana 99, (16) Michigan 83

At Bloomington, Ind., Neil Reed tied an Indiana record with eight 3-pointers and scored a career-high 26 points as the Hoosiers beat the Wolverines (14-5, 4-2 Big Ten).

Indiana (11-7, 4-2) led only 46-43 at halftime, but built it to 91-79 on Reed’s eighth 3-pointer with 4 minutes to go.

At Dallas, Koy Smith hit three 3-pointers to ignite an 18-4 second-half surge and Dallas native Jason Sasser scored 16 points as the Red Raiders eased past the Mustangs (5-11, 1-4 SWC).

The Red Raiders (15-1, 5-0) have won nine straight overall.

Loyola 76, Cal Poly SLO 64

Ime Oduok scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Lions (12-5) to a non-conference victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

LMU shot a season-high 61.2 percent from the field.
