Dollar Hits Two-Year High Vs. Yen

The dollar surged to its highest level in nearly two years against the Japanese yen Wednesday on news of a smaller Japanese trade surplus with the United States and new friction between China and Taiwan.

The dollar also rose against most other major currencies, including the German mark.

By 4 p.m. EST in New York, the dollar bought 106.93 yen, up from 105.84 yen Tuesday. It last traded close to 107 yen in February 1994. The dollar ended at 1.4836 marks, compared with 1.4791 marks the day before.
