Here’s a bar bet you might try next time you’re desperate to impress: At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, who was at every event in every venue?

No lie.

Whether team handball, water polo or synchronized hedge trimming, Eddie Bauer will be there, making a casually American fashion statement with the help of 60 NBC-TV announcers.

Eddie Bauer got the nod over highfalutin competitors in the fashion Olympics because NBC Sports president Dick Ebersol wanted an unmistakably “American expression” in its broadcasts, said Richard Valenza, president of Ward Rhobe Management Corp., which represented Eddie Bauer, a subsidiary of Spiegel Inc.
