Cox Named Assistant For Chiefs

Brett Cox, who captained the University of Alberta to a national hockey championship in 1992, became the Spokane Chiefs’ assistant coach Tuesday.

“Skill development at this level is of the utmost importance,” said Chiefs coach Mike Babcock. “With the number of young guys that will be on our club, we feel Brett has the ability to work individually with players to make them better.”

Cox, 29, will serve as head coach for six weeks when Babcock coaches the Canadian Junior Team in the this year’s World Junior Hockey Championships.

“I am looking forward to working with Mike Babcock and having the opportunity to win,” Cox said. “I’ve watched the Chiefs the last two years, and I think this is a good team.”

Cox, of Edmonton, Alberta, has served as assistant coach at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology the last two years.
