Red Wings Keep Bowman

Compiled From Wire Services

Red Wings coach Scotty Bowman will be back next season and have his staff intact, with a contract that calls for him to remain director of player personnel for the two following seasons.

Bowman, 62, led Detroit to an NHL-record 62 victories last season, but the Red Wings lost to eventual Stanley Cup champion Colorado in the Western Conference final. Bowman won the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but the Detroit Free Press said it was expected to pay him about $950,000 next season.

Patrick Flatley’s 13-year career with the New York Islanders ended when the team bought out the final year of his contract.

“He wanted a bigger slice of ice-time pie and I was reluctant to give it up,” general manager Mike Milbury said.

Flatley, who becomes an unrestricted free agent, was scheduled to earn $900,000 next season, but the Islanders reportedly bought out out his contract for $600,000.
