Highway District Regulates Tree-Cutting Along Roads

From Staff Reports

Property owners here now will have to have permission from the Sandpoint Independent Highway District before removing trees along the street.

The process requires filing a Tree Tracking Form at the Highway District office in the Federal Building. There is no charge.

The new policy, adopted last month, also requires that once a tree is removed it is replaced with an approved species. Disease-prone trees such as American elm, and trees with weaker wood such as box elder, are prohibited, said Linda Lovick, community forest coordinator.

The Highway District also will help people plant trees in the most appropriate location, giving consideration to things such as power lines and the shape of the tree’s crown.

People who want a waiver from the Highway District tree policy must submit that request in writing. For more information contact the Highway District office at 263-8131. , DataTimes
