Ferry Workers Charged With Attempted Murder

Compiled From Wire Services

Police filed attempted murder charges Thursday against a ferry captain and four crewmen who allegedly threw two boys overboard last week.

Police said ferry captain Isagani Maestro and four crew members of the Penafrancia 3 were identified by the victims during a lineup.

Meynard Alcala and Raymond Villena, both 15 years old, boarded the wrong ferry last week in Batangas City, 50 miles south of Manila.

When crew members discovered that the boys didn’t have enough money for return tickets, they reportedly beat them and threw them overboard.

The boys were rescued 19 hours later by a fishing boat off Romblon Island in the central Philippines.
