The Vancouver Canucks say they have ended negotiations with free agent Wayne Gretzky following reports that the NHL’s all-time leading scorer was set to return to Canada.

Gretzky is an unrestricted free agent after finishing last season with the St. Louis Blues.

In Stuttgart, Germany, Thomas Muster moved into the semifinals of the Mercedes Cup with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Francisco Clavet of Spain.

Second-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov also won, beating Felix Mantilla of Spain 2-6, 6-0, 6-2.

In Nottingham, England, a British jockey died after his horse fell, rolled over and crushed him during a race.

Richard Davis, 27, died at the Queen’s Medical Centre after undergoing surgery for internal bleeding, a hospital statement said.
