Tigers will purr again
The Detroit Tigers lose a couple of close games and your paper turns on them like a school of sharks (“Baseball should worry about Tigers,” May 21). Have we forgotten 1968 and 1984? Have we deserted Al Kaline, Kirk Gibson, and Ty What’s His Name? Mock us if you must, Spokesman, with your yellow journalism, but the Tigers will return and true Tigers fans will crow once more. Long live Denny McLain! Tim O’Doherty Spokane
What’s with all the jewelry?
Just what is it? A clan or a group, or just the right dream of a sharp jewelry salesman? Almost everyone who considers himself an athlete now wears a shiny necklace. This goes for the mighty pros, right down to the kids who are working to get a spot on the high school team.
Many years ago when I was in school, we would chew out and ridicule a necklace wearer. But now we worry that the basketball player might get his neck caught in the net in his 11-month season.
I have noticed one group which is an exception to the rule. I have noticed no necklaces on my heroes of the Mariners: Ken Griffey Jr., Jay Buhner and Dan Wilson. Carlton Gladder Spokane
