School District Ouster Bid Fails

From Staff And Wire Reports

Recall organizers failed to oust Grangeville Joint School District trustee William A. Carter in a special election.

Tuesday’s vote was 174 for recall and 194 opposed. Backers needed 271 votes and a majority of those cast to oust Carter from the school board. The 271 votes is based on the number cast for Carter in his 1995 re-election.

Carter of Riggins, had been criticized for backing Salmon River Junior-Senior High School Principal Winnie T. Ainsworth. During her first year at the Riggins school, Ainsworth has been attacked by some patrons for efforts to restore discipline to the school and raise test scores.

Carter has said she deserves more than a few months to prove herself.
