Inline Hockey Regionals Here To Determine National Berths

Twenty teams from Spokane, Seattle and four Oregon cities are entered in the inaugural USA Hockey InLine Northwest Zone championships this weekend and next weekend at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

Bladin’ Inc. of Spokane, the host team, has entries in all four divisions.

Competition today and Sunday will be in the pee wee (12 and under) and bantam (14 and under) divisions. Games begin at 8 a.m. Championship games will be Sunday afternoon.

Oregon teams from Bend, Corvallis and Portland will be joined by Spokane and Seattle in the pee wee division and Spokane and Salem in the bantam.

Next weekend will be the midget (17 and under) and adult divisions.

Division winners qualify for the national championships against nine other regional winners Aug. 13-18 in Minneapolis-St. Paul.

Legion baseball

Eric Hayden made a late curtain call Friday, and it was a winner.

Hayden, the AAA American Legion’d first player of the week, delivered a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Blue Devils (6-2) a 6-5 victory over the Cannons (2-4) in the nightcap at Jackson Field.

Hayden was honored for pitching two wins with a 1.50 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 14 innings and batting .624 last week.

Steve Warren drove in four runs for the Blue Devils and Andrew Larson two. Jeremy Isherwood had three RBIs for the Cannons.

In the first game, Grant Reeves pitched a three-hitter as the first-place North Stars (8-3) shut out the Bandits (2-5) 3-0.

Reeves struck out eight and walked eight and also went 2 for 3, including a double, and drove in two runs.

Basketball

Michael Gembala from Dayton, Troy Nealey, Lacrosse-Washtucna, and Isaac Hall of Orofino were named to the 14-member Idaho Summer Prep Team that will participate in the John Farrell’s Nike National Prep Championships July 16-23 in Las Vegas.
