A-3 Wrestling Changes Venues

The A-3 District I-II wrestling tournament has been moved from Kootenai High School to Silver Hills Middle School in Osburn.

Tournament director Kevin Kincheloe said a transformer blew up in Harrison on Friday, leaving the school without power. Matches will begin at 10 this morning.

NIC games called off

North Idaho College’s baseball season openers have been postponed due to weather and playing field conditions. NIC was to have opened today against Skagit Valley in Coeur d’Alene.

NIC sophomore wins shot

Mitch Armuth, a sophomore from Elko, Nev., won the national championship in the shot put at the NJCAA Indoors in Carbondale, Ill., with a throw of 53-3-1/2.

Big Sky indoor

Brian Davidson won the long jump and took third in the high jump Friday to help give Boise State the men’s lead after the first day of competition at the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Bozeman, Mont.

The Boise State men scored 58 points and Northern Arizona 53 after six events. Idaho had 28 for a distant third.

Boise State and Northern Arizona also dominated the woman’s competition. NAU held a 46-37 lead over the Broncos after four events.

Idaho’s Thad Hathaway tied for first place in the high jump with a leap of 7-feet 1-inch. Geoff Judd cleared 6-11 to finish fourth. Also placing for the Vandals were Niels Kruller, who took fourth in the long jump and Kyle Daley and Scott McCarty who finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 35-pound weight throw.

Jill Wimer notched a third-place finish in the shot put for the Idaho women.

Women’s basketball

Melissa Beil scored 20 points and Julie Brown added 16 as Montana State defeated Idaho 69-52 in a Big Sky Conference basketball game Friday night in Bozeman, Mont.

Idaho led 26-24 at halftime but never threatened in the later going.

Also in double figures for the Lady Bobcats (13-13, 6-7) was Blythe Hommes with 11 points.

Idaho (7-18, 4-9) was led by Michelle Greenwood with 15 points and Natale Hawks with 13.

Montana State went 13-21 at the free throw line while Idaho was 6-8.
