Lakeside Reaches Championship Game

Junior guard James Twoteeth supplied 13 points for Lakeside as the Knights slid past Highland of Craigmont 70-69 Friday in a championship semifinal round at the Idaho A-4 boys high school basketball tournament.

In the other semifinal, senior guard Kurt Fillmore hit a 3-pointer to start the game and Nampa Christian never trailed as the top-ranked Trojans (24-1) cruised past Carey 59-53. Carey finished 20-8.

Lakeside (21-4) led from the first quarter on, mounting a run of 14 straight points to move ahead 33-16. But the Huskies (19-7) worked back to a 38-34 deficit at the half.

Highland moved to within one point three times in the second half, with Phillip Way sinking nine points in the last minutes of the third quarter. Way led the Huskies with 22 points.

Shoshone (22-5) downed Cascade (15-10) in a consolation semifinal as senior post Brian Ross kicked in a game-high 24 points. Tom Cimbalik and Steve Hull led the Ramblers with eight points each.

In the other consolation bracket game, Oakley (23-3) cruised past North Gem (14-11) 62-50. Senior Matt Smith chipped in 24 points for the Hornets. Blake Peterson scored 15 for the Cowboys.

Senior post Austin Tubbs hit 25 points and senior guard Bryson Vaughan was good for 23 as Malad outraced top-ranked Teton, 66-54, in a championship semifinal.

Senior guard David Fiscus put up a game-high 13 points to help Potlatch shut down Grangeville 48-28 in the other championship semifinal.

Potlatch (20-4) only led Grangeville (18-8) by 23-22 at the half, but then stopped the Bulldogs flat, allowing only four points in the third quarter and two in the fourth. Grangeville shot poor from outside and started going inside, but it was too late.

In a consolation bracket games, Declo (17-7) blasted Fruitland 81-62 and Soda Springs (17-10) whipped Homedale 65-53. Fruitland finished 18-8 and Homedale 17-8.

Second-ranked Malad and Teton played played close for the first half before the Dragons blew the game open in the third quarter.
