Mariners Win 14th Straight Exhibition Over 2 Years
The Seattle Mariners won their 14th consecutive spring training game over San Diego, routing the Padres 10-3 Saturday behind three RBIs by Alex Diaz.
The Mariners, whose streak began in 1992, have won all 10 games vs. San Diego at Peoria Stadium.
Seattle had 15 hits against the Padres, who have given up 22 runs in two games. The Mariners broke open the game with a six-run seventh inning against Joey Long.
Wilson signs contract
Mariners catcher Dan Wilson signed a two-year contract for a guaranteed $1.4 million, and two pitchers also signed.
The signings brought all 40 players on the Mariners’ major league roster under contract. General manger Woody Woodward had said any who did not come to terms by noon Saturday would have their old contracts renewed.
Wilson stands to be paid $375,000 this year and $1.025 million in 1997, plus unspecified performance bonuses. Last year he received $175,000.
Relief pitcher Bobby Ayala signed a one-year contract for $325,000, a $75,000 increase over what he got last season.
Pitcher Edwin Hurtado, obtained from Toronto in an off-season trade for reliever Bill Risley, signed for unannounced terms.
