Gwen Torrence, the Olympic 200-meter gold medalist and world 100-meter champion, shattered the American indoor record in the women’s 200 for the second straight day, blazing to victory in 22.33 seconds at the USA Mobil Championships.

Torrence’s time, which made her No. 4 on the all-time performers’ list, broke the record of 22.70 she set in Friday’s preliminaries.

The victory also completed a sprint sweep for Torrence. Earlier Saturday, she won the 60 in 7.05. The world 200 record is 21.87 by Merlene Ottey of Jamaica.

Michael Johnson, the world’s No. 1 men’s long sprinter, destroyed a powerful field in the 400 for his 51st straight finals victory.

But Carl Lewis, once the top sprinter in the world, finished last in his preliminary heat of the 60 meters.
