Rathdrum Chamber Backs School Bond
The Lakeland School District won the endorsement of the Rathdrum Area Chamber of Commerce and $75 for its bond levy campaign Thursday.
The school district has scheduled a March 19 bond election for $9.3 million to build a junior high and add several classrooms to other schools.
A separate issue for $650,000 will be on the ballot for facilities and equipment to start a hot lunch program.
The pro-bond group, called Citizens Alliance for Responsible Education, has raised about $500 to $600 to promote the bond issue and combat opposition from Citizens Against Nonstop Taxation, a group that formed to fight the bond.
Bond proponents argue that Lakeland soon will outgrow its school facilities. The district has gained 1,163 students since 1990, and has the highest growth rate in the county.
The new junior high school would be built in Spirit Lake for 450 students. Thirteen other classrooms, covered play areas and remodeling projects are included in the proposed bond levy. , DataTimes
