Sampras Limps Into Quarterfinals
Pete Sampras advanced to the quarterfinals of the ABN AMRO indoor tournament with his second straight hard-fought victory.
The world’s top-ranked player was hampered after twisting an ankle in the second set, but rallied to beat Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland 6-7 (8-6), 6-4, 6-4.
Defending champion Richard Krajicek was eliminated by Frenchman Cedric Pioline 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Pioline faces a quarterfinal against Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov, seeded No. 3, who ousted against Dutchman Jacco Eltingh 6-4, 6-2.
Second-seeded Croatian Goran Ivanisevic steamrolled his way into the quarterfinals, beating Omar Camporese of Italy 6-3, 6-1.
