Hull, Topp Seek Prosecutor Job Again

Attorney John Topp announced Monday that he will make another run for Bonner County prosecutor.

Topp, 42, ran for the job four years ago. He lost by a mere 109 votes to current Prosecutor Tevis Hull.

“I hadn’t planned on doing this, but many people, including law enforcement officers, have repeatedly asked me to run,” Topp said.

Hull also announced Monday that he will seek a second term and run as an independent.

He ran as an independent in the last election but received an endorsement from the Republican party.

Candidates have until April 5 to file candidacy petitions.

Hull touted his record the past three years, saying he brought 10 times more DUI cases to District Court than the previous part-time prosecutor, and now he plans to organize a domestic violence task force.

Yet Hull has come under fire recently.

A dozen law enforcement officers took out a newspaper ad several months ago saying they had lost confidence in the prosecutor.

The ad appeared after Hull failed to file charges against a man who started a gunfight with sheriff’s deputies.

A deputy and the suspect both were wounded. The suspect was being held under armed guard at the hospital, but was ordered released after no charges were filed against him.
