In Calcutta, fans threw rocks and bottles, set fires and stormed the field, forcing the World Cup semifinal cricket match between India and Sri Lanka to be called off.

The Indian crowd of 110,000 at Eden Gardens was outraged over Sri Lanka’s dominance over the Indian batsmen.

Portugal qualified for the Olympic soccer tournament for the first time since the 1920s, beating Italy 1-0. Argentina, Brazil and the U.S. also have qualified for the tournament.
