Agassi Edges Martin

Compiled From Wire Services

Andre Agassi, coming up with big shots at critical times, won a pair of tiebreakers to edge Todd Martin in three sets in the Newsweek Champions Cup.

Agassi had to fight back from a 6-3 deficit in the firstset tiebreak and won just two games in the second set as Martin overwhelmed him with accurate serves and blistering shots down the lines. But Agassi came back to dominate the third-set tiebreaker and grab a 7-6 (11-9), 2-6, 7-6 (7-1) victory.

Two-time defending champion Pete Sampras had a considerably easier time, beating Michael Joyce 6-3, 6-4. The match was Sampras’ first of the tournament because he had a first-round bye and his second-round opponent, Alex Corretja, forfeited with a sprained ankle.

Jim Courier was knocked out by Wayne Ferreira of South Africa, 6-4, 6-4.
