Pepperdine Left-Hander Wolf No-Hits Gu In Zags’ Debut

Sophomore left-hander Randy Wolf (4-1) of Pepperdine struck out 11 and threw a nine-inning, complete-game no-hitter Friday as the Waves (14-11, 5-0) ruined the Zags’ WCC debut, 2-0 at Malibu, Calif.
Pepperdine pitchers have thrown five no-hitters in 56-plus years. Scott Marrett had the last, in 1985.
GU (5-7) used to play in the Pacific-10 Conference Northern Division.
Matt Siwek (1-2), the second of three GU pitchers, took the loss after allowing Justin Hodgdon’s sacrifice fly and Gerardo Gonzalez’s RBI single in the eighth.
Catcher Alex Schuerman homered and drove in two runs to lead Whitworth (2-1) to a 3-2 non-league win over Eastern Oregon State College (5-6) at the LC Motors Invitational in Lewiston.
Sam Flemming pitched a complete game for the Pirates, allowing eight hits and two runs - neither earned - while striking out seven. Left fielder Pat Fischer went 2 for 3, scored once and drove in a run for Whitworth.
Golf
Spokane’s Mark Rohde and partner Jerry Minor finished third at the Pacific Northwest PGA Top-Flite Shoot-Out at Indian Summer Golf and Country Club in Olympia.
Rohde and Minor finished with a 7-under-par 65 for a three-day total of 18-under 198, five behind champions Jeff Coston and Mike Gove. Rohde and Minor pocketed $1,100.
Another shot back and tied for fourth were Chris Mitchell of Spokane and Michael Combs. They earned $825.
Skiing
Schweitzer Mountain Resort of Sandpoint will not reopen the Great Escape quad chairlift for the rest of the season after the lift manufacturer requested a detailed inspection of the detachable grips.
