Tagliabue Will Ask Behring Why Hawks Practicing In L.A.
NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue has summoned Seattle Seahawks president Dave Behring and other team officials to New York for a Friday hearing on the team’s off-season workouts in Anaheim, Calif.
“The Kingdome safety issues raised by the Seahawks have no relationship to the club’s abilities to conduct training programs in its Kirkland facilities” just east of Seattle, Tagliabue said.
“Rather, the purpose of the Seahawks practicing in Southern California seems to be preemptive and supportive of Ken Behring’s Feb. 2 announcement that the ‘NFL franchise he purchased in 1988 is leaving Seattle.’
“We need to have a formal presentation from team officials this Friday regarding why they believe the players cannot work out at their year-round facility in Kirkland,” the commissioner said.
Meanwhile, it was disclosed Behring has expressed interest in buying the California Angels.
“I will not sell this team to Ken Behring,” Jackie Autry, the Angels’ executive vice president and wife of club owner Gene Autry, said.
She said she believes Behring’s pitches to Anaheim officials helped scuttle the Angels’ deal with The Walt Disney Co.
