Scott McCarron, with one top 10 finish during two years on the tour, and fellow sophomore Tommy Tolles moved past Tom Watson in the third round of the PGA’s Freeport-McDermott Classic in New Orleans.

McCarron had four bogeys and seven birdies in gusting wind for a 69 to take the lead at 12-under-par 204. Tolles birdied six holes, including the 17th and 18th, to complete the round at 66, putting him 11 under. Watson, one stroke back at the start of the round, is at 10 under and in third place. Second-round leader Lennie Clements shot 74 and is at 9 under. Pullman native Kirk Triplett shot 70 for a 214.

Jimmy Powell and Orville Moody shot a 6-under 66 to take a one-shot lead in the $1.1 million Legends of Golf team event in La Quinta, Calif.

Handling wind gusts of up to 35 mph was mostly a breeze for Kristal Parker-Gregory, who shot a 4-under 69 for a three-shot lead over Laura Davies after the third round of the LPGA Standard Register Ping in Phoenix.

Parker-Gregory stands at 9-under 210 heading into today’s final round. Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, shot 75 for a 222 total.
