Moving quickly to keep from losing both the NHL’s Florida Panthers and the NBA’s Miami Heat to neighboring Broward County, the Miami City Commission and the Metro-Dade Commission voted to help pay for a new sports arena.

The two governing boards’ approval for building the $210 million sports complex along Biscayne Bay in downtown Miami threatened to jeopardize Broward County’s efforts to build an arena in the Fort Lauderdale area.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers owners and county officials agreed to a compromise proposal for a new stadium, breaking an eight-month impasse.

At El Paso, Texas, after an anxious, months-long search for a financial backer, Sun Bowl officials announced that Minneapolis-based Norwest Bank has agreed to sponsor the game at least through 1997.

Host Texas saw its lead in the NCAA men’s swimming championships shrink going into today’s final day of the meet. Auburn outscored Texas 182.5-161 Friday, leaving the Longhorns ahead 331-302.5.
