A contracting group that includes the company that built the Kingdome has submitted the low bid to manage construction of the Mariners ballpark.

The Public Facilities District, which is overseeing construction of the 47,000-seat, retractable-roof ballpark, opened the bids Thursday and is to officially name the contractor next week.

The low bid was submitted by Huber, Hunt and Nichols, an Indianapolis company working with Kiewit Construction of Omaha, the company that built the Kingdome.

In Los Angeles, Hawaii defeated Penn State 15-9, 15-3, 13-15, 15-7 in the semifinals of the men’s NCAA Division I volleyball championships.

The Rainbow Warriors (27-2) will play defending national champion UCLA (25-5) in Saturday’s title game on the Bruins’ home court at Pauley Pavilion.

The Bruins swept Lewis University 15-7, 15-8, 15-10 in the second semifinal.

Darryl Strawberry will sign with Mike Veeck’s St. Paul (Minn.) Saints today as he tries to play his way back into the big leagues.
