Hints From Heloise

King Features Syndicate

Dear Heloise: After reading your response concerning cleaning bronze cemetery markers, I felt I should write. I have been in the cemetery industry since 1969. At our cemeteries we use bronze on granite memorials as you discussed. The bronze markers come from the factory with a special covering over them. This covering is there to protect the bronze. Once it is damaged by cleaning with improper tools or cleaning solutions, the bronze will be damaged. Never clean the marker with anything that has any type of oil in it. Never use anything that will scratch the covering.

Our business offers a cleaning kit from the bronze company that’s good for two cleanings. After proper cleaning the marker will look as it did when new. Bronze markers are the best as they are cast made and never will be affected by the elements. Keep up the good work; we love you! - Ann Krock, San Antonio Thanks for sharing this valuable information. We checked with several monument companies and most didn’t have the kit in stock, but said they could order it. - Heloise
