Ferris Rules Baseball For 3rd Time Since ‘92

GSL

Ferris clinched the Greater Spokane League baseball title outright with a 5-2 win over visiting North Central on Tuesday.

It’s the third time since 1992 that the Saxons (12-4) have won the title.

Ferris earned a berth to the regional playoffs on May 18 at Seafirst Stadium.

As the No. 1 seed, the Saxons have a bye to the GSL’s district playoffs, which start Friday. All district games will be at Seafirst Stadium.

Against NC (4-12), the Saxons used Brandon Molett’s three-run homer in the first as momentum.

In other regular season-opening games, visiting Central Valley (11-5) beat Mead 3-1 to earn the second seed to district.

The Bears’ Nate Lynch drove in the game-winning runs in the top of the fifth with a single.

With the win CV also earns an opening-round bye at district. Third-seeded Mead (10-6) will play No. 6 University (8-8) at 1 p.m. on Friday.

Shadle Park’s 5-3 win against visiting U-Hi means the Highlanders (9-7) get the No. 5 seed to district and face No. 4 Gonzaga Prep (10-6) at 3:45 p.m. Friday.

Against the Titans, Shadle’s Joe Baune drove in two with a single to provide the winning margin.

At Hart Field, Lewis and Clark (3-13) wrapped up its season with its second consecutive win, beating Rogers 8-3.

The Tigers’ Dealy Etter scattered four hits in six innings and was credited with the win. Rogers finished 5-11.

The two teams committed 13 errors.

Softball

Behind pitcher Cheryl Andrizzi, U-Hi (13-3) won the GSL title and avoided a one-game playoff with Mead with a 7-2 win over host Shadle Park.

The Highlanders ended their season at 1-15. Andrizzi pitched a two-hitter and struck out 11.

Mead (12-4), which finished a game back, also earns a first-round bye.

In earning the No. 1 seed to district, the Titans received a bye.

NC (11-5) is No. 3 and will face No. 6 Rogers (7-9) at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday at Franklin Park, site of all district games.

No. 4 CV (10-6) will play No. 5 G-Prep (9-7) at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

The lowest-seeded winner will face U-Hi at 6 p.m. Friday, and the higher seed will meet Mead at 3:45 p.m. Friday.

Golf

Mead’s Britney Holt shot an 8-over-par 80 at Downriver Golf Course to win the girls District 8 tournament, which determined berths to state.

Holt had a two-day total of 9-over 153, seven shots ahead of Jennifer Hatley of Ferris. Hatley shot an 83 in round two.

Earning trips to state were: Sarah Northcutt, Mead; Bridget Johnson, Hillary Prugh and Laura Hicks, Ferris; Debbie Haakstad, Shadle; Jackie Shea, G-Prep; and Tricia Bassett, LC.
