Sven Teutenberg of Germany won Thursday’s Tour DuPont race by about 6 feet and Lance Armstrong retained his overall lead for the eighth day. Teutenberg completed the 105-mile Blowing Rock to Charlotte, N.C., road race in 3 hours, 47 minutes and 15 seconds. Three stages remain in the 1,225-mile race.

Denny McLain, who won 31 games for the Detroit Tigers in 1968, bought a condominium in Puerto Rico and covered expenses for his private plane with funds stolen from a meat company pension plan, a federal indictment released in Detroit alleges.

McLain and two business partners are accused of transferring more than $12 million of a pension plan to a bank, then converting $3 million of that for personal and Peet Packing use.

Gilbert Schaller of Austria upset top-seeded Boris Becker 6-2, 6-2 in the third-round of $2.2 million German Open in Hamburg.

Arie Luyendyk, who owns the record for the fastest Indianapolis 500, turned the fastest unofficial lap in the history of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Netherlands-born driver turned three straight laps of more than 237 mph - the fastest of which was 237.774.

A friend who sent a package to ex-Boston Red Sox manager Butch Hobson last week said it contained information about a trash dump, not cocaine.

Jerry Poe of Hueytown, Ala., said the overnight letter he sent from Birmingham, Ala., contained literature about landfills, and he was surprised by news reports naming him as the person who sent Hobson a package containing drugs.

Poe said he had not been contacted by investigators.

An agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration has said an arrest was anticipated in the Birmingham area, but not for at least a week.

WBC heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson and several of his friends played a basketball game Wednesday against a team of high school basketball coaches to help raise money for the Chalker High School athletic program in Southington, Ohio, where Tyson lives.
