Associated Press

National League

John Smoltz became the major leagues’ first seven-game winner and Chipper Jones homered and drove in three runs Friday night, leading the Atlanta Braves to their sixth straight win, an 11-0 rout of the Philadelphia Phillies at Philadelphia.

Smoltz (7-1) gave up two singles in six innings to win his seventh straight decision. The right-hander struck out seven, walked one, and didn’t allow a runner to get past first.

Mets 2, Cubs 0 New York

Bobby Jones allowed four hits in eight innings and Butch Huskey hit his second homer of the season as New York snapped a four-game losing streak.

Giants 5, Pirates 4 (10) Pittsburgh

Glenallen Hill doubled in the winning run in the 10th inning and homered as San Francisco withstood Mark Johnson’s four RBIs to defeat Pittsburgh.

Barry Bonds hit his major league-leading 16th homer as the Giants lost a 4-1 lead on Johnson’s three-run homer in the sixth before rallying against Francisco Cordova (0-2), Pittsburgh’s third pitcher.

Expos 5, Astros 2 Montreal

Henry Rodriguez’s second homer of the game, a three-run shot in the eighth inning, sent Montreal to a win.

Rodriguez, who has 15 homers, hit a solo homer off Doug Brocail in the first inning before connecting for his three-run shot off Jeff Tabaka.

Marlins 4, Rockies 2 Miami

Jeff Conine saved a run with his glove and hit a tie-breaking, two-run single to help Florida beat Colorado for its fifth win in a row.

The Rockies have fallen into last place in the N.L. West with five consecutive defeats, their longest losing streak since August.

Dodgers 3, Cardinals 2 (12) St. Louis

Raul Mondesi scored from second base in the 12th inning when St. Louis first baseman Pat Borders, playing there for the first time in his career, mishandled a ground ball for an error, giving Los Angeles a win.

Cardinals reliever Dennis Eckersley (0-3) struck out the first two hitters in the 12th, before Mondesi doubled down the left-field line. After an intentional walk, Borders, who has played more than 700 games in his major league career at catcher, wasn’t able to cleanly field Eric Karros’ hard-hit grounder.

Reds 5, Padres 3, susp. (7) Cincinnati

Eric Davis hit a three-run homer, his fourth in five games, to give Cincinnati a lead in a game that started 3 hours late and was suspended in the seventh inning because of rain. The game will resume tonight at 4:05 p.m. PDT.
