Conchita Martinez spoiled Martina Hingis’ bid for her first title, soundly beating the 15-year-old in two sets in the Italian Open final in Rome.
The 6-2, 6-3 victory took only and 1 hour 16 minutes and brought a record fourth consecutive Italian title to Martinez, who was seeded second.
Hingis achieved the biggest upset of her short career when she beat Steffi Graf, the world’s No. 1 woman player, in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Fernando Meligeni, who held off six match points earlier in the week, did not need a great escape as he overpowered Mats Wilander to win the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship in Pinehurst, N.C.
The 25-year-old Brazilian won the first three games and never let up on his way to a comfortable 6-4, 6-2 victory.
In Rockville, Md., Andres Gomez and John Lloyd advanced to the finals in the $150,000 Corel Champions over-35 tennis tournament.
Gomez, the No. 2 seed, defeated Bjorn Borg 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) and Lloyd upset No. 4 seed Johann Kriek 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
