Ccs Retains Shot At Softball Crown
Clackamas and Edmonds came through unscathed Friday after the opening day of the eight-team NWAACC softball tournament at Franklin Park.
The leaders, 2-0 on the day, will break the tie with a 10 a.m. game today at Spokane Falls Community College. The winner has two chances to win the title.
Also in the title running are host CC Spokane and Walla Walla, both of which went 2-1. They meet in an 8 a.m. loser-out game, also at SFCC.
The host Sasquatch beat Olympic 7-2, lost to Clackamas by the same score, then eliminated Lower Columbia 7-4 with a three-run seventh inning.
Against Olympic, Julie Fountain pitched a three-hitter and Jenn Risinger and Heather Hedum drove in two runs apiece.
Barbara Cossette of CCS had a solo homer in the loss to Clackamas. Cossette also homered against Lower Columbia, and Kelly Kinder homered and drove in four runs to support winner Laura Schwarz.

Men’s basketball
Rodrigo de la Fuente, a 6-foot-7 guard from San Jacinto (Texas) Junior College, has signed a letter of intent with Washington State.
A native of Spain, de la Fuente averaged 8.1 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists for the 23-8 Gators. He is the first player to sign with the Cougars during the late period and fifth overall.
“We’re trying to get taller on the perimeter without losing too much quickness,” said WSU coach Kevin Eastman. “Rodrigo provides us with another very skilled player who understands the game. He’s played in a difficult junior-college league and has had an opportunity to play internationally.”
Women’s basketball
Kari Hutchinson, a 6-0 point guard, has decided not to transfer to the University of Montana from Notre Dame.
Hutchinson, who played sparingly for the Irish, announced earlier this year she would transfer to the Missoula school. Hutchinson, who led St. George’s to the 1994 State B title, was recruited by UM out of high school.
“She just changed her mind,” said UM coach Robin Selvig. “Nothing surprises me anymore.”
Baseball
Left-hander Randy Flores (8-1) pitched a no-hitter for 7-2/3 innings and had a season-high 10 strikeouts to lead Southern California (40-14-1) to a 7-3 win over Washington (30-27) in the second game of the best-of-three Pacific-10 Conference championships at Los Angeles.
The third and deciding game will be played this afternoon. Washington won Thursday’s game 6-2.
