Batt To Propose Funds For Housing

From Staff And Wire Reports

Gov. Phil Batt says Idaho needs more affordable housing and next year’s state budget should include more money for its construction.

Floods in North Idaho and other budget priorities this year ate into state funding for homes, Batt told the Idaho Housing Coalition’s six annual summit last week. That money was to be used to match federal grants.

Batt said he hoped projects planned for this year continue.

“It certainly requires more attention next year,” he said. “Money is tight and there are a tremendous number of priorities, but I consider this a high one.”

The summit brought together civil leaders, housing advocates and business people to discuss funding and community support.

Batt said it is tough for some projects to overcome objections.

Critics often cite negative stereotypes surrounding housing projects and worries about declining property values.

“Decent, safe and affordable housing is critical to strong families and communities,” he said. “Fair and affordable housing is at the heart of every healthy community.”
