At a glance: Kiona-Benton has been on a mission to get back to the state championship since last year, when it finished second. Rochester pummeled Ki-Be 11-0 in the championship game. In the dugout for Lakewood is assistant coach Doug Plucker. A Spokane native, Plucker played baseball for Eastern Washington before transferring to Whitworth when EWU’s program was eliminated.

Defending champion: DeSales.

At a glance: DeSales went 26-0 last year and won the title game 9-2 over Kittitas. DeSales lost some players to graduation, but those who came back certainly didn’t lose their spirit.

As for Davenport, a lot of its hopes will ride on the arm of senior pitcher Tyson Deal, who has a 10-0 record. He and catcher Steve Cannon formed one of the best batteries in the Bi-County League this season.

Track and field

When - Today and Saturday

Where - Eastern Washington University in Cheney

Class A

1995 top three teams - Boys: Chelan, Ridgefield, (tie) Chewelah and King’s. Girls: King’s, Cascade (Leavenworth), Connell.

Returning individual champions - Boys: Dusty Lane, Cashmere (110, 300 hurdles); Damon Harris, Steilcoom (100); Pete Lopez, Tonasket (200); Kevin Smith, Ridgefield (1,600); Eric Boyd, Chelan (javelin); Justin Evander, Tenino (high jump). Girls: Megan Franza, Cascade (Leavenworth) (100, 300 hurdles, long jump, high jump); LaShaunda Fowler, Foster (100, 200); Amy King, King’s (1,600); Cicely Clinkenbeard, Okanogan (triple jump); Alyssa Barrus, Ridgefield (shot put).

Outlook - Boyd gives Chelan a chance to repeat. The defending champion in the javelin, he enters as the leader in the long and triple jumps, events he placed third in. Lane is one of the best hurdles in the state, any class. The girls race is interesting with Jill Pimley, the B champion in the 300 hurdles, long jump and triple jump, moving up to Goldendale, where she’ll challenge Franza, defending champ in four events, including the 300 hurdles and long jump. Fowler is going for a sprint sweep, entering second-ranked in the 400.

Class B

1995 top three teams - Boys: Tacoma Baptist, Crescent, Republic. Girls: St. George’s, Ritzville, (tie) Klickitat, Willapa Valley.

Returning champions - Boys: Morgan Chase, Republic (110, 300 hurdles); Lex Katich, Wilbur-Creston (pole vault). Girls: Tricia Lamb, St. John-Endicott (100 hurdles); Stephanie Kubalek, Crescent (400); Jessica North, Moses Lake Christian (3,200).

Outlook - Chase, like Lane, is one of the best hurdlers around, and he is also a leading contender in the 100 and 200. He makes the Tigers a threat for a trophy. With Pimley gone, the girls race is much different. Andee Schmick and Lamb, among the best in the short hurdles and ranked 1-2 in the horizontal jumps, make SJE a contender, along with Ritzville and its stable of speedsters.
