Local Colleges Prepare For Tipoff

All four of the area’s Division I women’s basketball teams and two of the D-I men’s teams open their exhibition schedules this weekend.

Gonzaga and Idaho kick off tonight with the Bulldog women facing Brahe, Sweden, at Martin Centre, and the Vandal women playing host to Simon Fraser at Memorial Gym. Both games start at 7.

In Saturday’s exhibitions, Eastern Washington’s men take on the Blue Angels at 4 p.m. at Reese Court and Brahe travels to Washington State to play the Cougar women at 8 p.m. at Bohler Gym.

On Sunday, WSU’s men meet Telecom, Portugal, at 2 p.m. at Friel Court, and EWU’s women face Simon Fraser at 4 at Reese Court.

Towery named MVP

Coeur d’Alene High senior setter Kimi Towery was selected as most valuable player by a vote of the Inland Empire League’s volleyball coaches.

CdA captured league and Region I championships. Teammates Angie Shirley (middle blocker) and Jessica Janke (outside hitter), both seniors, also were named to the first team.

Joining the Vikings on first team were: junior Lindsay Herbert (mb) of Lake City, senior Mandy Ringhand (oh) of Sandpoint, senior Jessica Waltz (mb) of Post Falls and senior Kari Alldredge (oh) of Lewiston.

Named to the second team were: Sarah Perry (setter) and Melanie Adams (backrow specialist) of LC; Vicki Smith (setter) and Annie Foster (bs) of Lewiston; Ashley Carlson (mb) of Sandpoint; and Lyndsy Klaudt (oh) and Janelle Ruen (mb) of Post Falls.
